Millville CHIROPRACTIC TIP OF THE MONTH: Exercise the Quadratus Lumborum

The quadratus lumborum – a quadrilateral-shaped muscle - is a paired muscle on the left and right side of the abdominal wall. It is a deep muscle and usually considered a back muscle as it extends from the 12th rib to the upper 4 lumbar vertebrae. When contracted, the quadratus lumborum produces lateral flexion of the lumbar spine and/or rise of the pelvis. (5) Various bridge-type exercises are being studied about the way in which they strengthen the quadratus lumborum’s dual layers of muscle in order for it to best contribute to the motor control of the lumbar pain and prevent back pain. (6) Wilson Family Chiropractic and you can discuss how your spine may benefit from such exercise at your next Millville chiropractic visit to Wilson Family Chiropractic.
