Millville Knee Osteoarthritis and Quality of Life with a Mediterranean Diet

What do stiff, popping, cracking knees and olive oil, fruits, veggies and red wine have in common? Knee osteoarthritis! Millville knee pain sufferers undergo the morning routine with “bad” knees, the stiffness and pain that comes with waking up and moving. Wilson Family Chiropractic hears our Millville chiropractic patients bemoan this all the time. Those Millville knee pain sufferers would be pleased to get some relief. What is one way to get some relief? The Mediterranean diet that involves, of all things, eating. Wilson Family Chiropractic asks “How bad can eating be for Millville knee pain relief?”

Millville OSTEOARTHRITIS SUFFERERS AND THEIR PAIN

Millville knee osteoarthritis is widespread. There are numerous Millville knee pain sufferers. They are not alone! 240 million people around the world live with osteoarthritis. That bothers about 10% of men and 18% of women. (1) Any Millville knee osteoarthritis sufferer recognizes the knee pain, the morning stiffness, and the creaky joint motion that lessens the quality of daily life. (1) It’s just not very fun. Now a Mediterranean diet could be some fun though!

WHAT TO EAT ON A MEDITERRANEAN DIET

The Mediterranean diet includes eating lots of fruits and vegetable, legumes and nuts, cereals and seeds, seafood and fish. The Mediterranean diet permits moderate consumption of dairy, poultry and eggs as well as red wine and olive oil as the key source of dietary lipids. (1) Yum! Eating a Mediterranean diet can be quite delicious as well as adventurous for a recent Mediterranean diet follower.

BENEFITS OF THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET

Knee osteoarthritis entails inflammation as well as pain. A review of three studies points out that biomarkers of inflammation and cartilage degradation because of osteoarthritis fell in the Mediterranean diet group. (1) Particularly, the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-1α decreased in the Mediterranean diet group. (2) Knee osteoarthritis patients who better followed a Mediterranean diet show a reduced risk of worsening knee pain at four years follow up. For those who didn’t experience knee osteoarthritis at the start of the 4 years study and followed a Mediterranean diet, a 9% lowered risk of getting knee osteoarthritis was reported. (3) Overall, a higher adherence to a Mediterranean diet is affiliated with better quality of life and less pain, disability and depressive symptoms. (4)
